Vaseline petroleum jelly is made by refining and purifying crude oil through multiple industrial processes. What starts as black, thick crude oil becomes the clear, safe petroleum jelly we use on our skin.
It All Starts Underground
Crude oil forms deep in the Earth from ancient plants and animals that died millions of years ago. This black, thick liquid contains many different substances mixed together. Oil companies drill deep wells to pump this crude oil up to the surface.
Distillation Separates the Parts
At oil refineries, crude oil gets heated in tall towers called distillation columns. Different parts of the oil turn into gas at different temperatures. The heavier parts that don't evaporate easily are what we need for petroleum jelly.
Removing the Bad Stuff
The heavy oil still contains harmful chemicals and impurities that would be dangerous for skin. Special cleaning processes use acids and other chemicals to remove these toxic substances. This step is repeated many times to make sure everything harmful is gone.
Bleaching Makes It Clear
The cleaned petroleum is still yellow or brown in color. Clay and other bleaching agents are mixed with the petroleum to remove the color. After this process, the petroleum becomes much lighter and clearer.
Final Purification Steps
The petroleum goes through final filtering to remove any remaining particles. It's also tested in laboratories to make sure it meets safety standards. Only after passing all these tests can it be called pharmaceutical-grade petroleum jelly.
From Factory to Your Home
The finished petroleum jelly is heated slightly to make it easier to pour into containers. Machines fill thousands of jars per hour with the clear, smooth jelly. The containers are sealed, labeled, and shipped to stores around the world.
